Define Holding Space

What does it mean to "hold space"?

It can mean a lot of different things to different people but what it boils down to is having judgment free empathy for another person and providing that space for them to feel like their voice is being heard. That means I am physically, mentally, and emotionally present for someone else & support them through what they are experiencing.

What does this have to do with birth work & being a doula? Often times when I meet new clients they come to me with a variety of fears, anxieties or past traumas. Typically what they want is help processing, planning and navigating those during their pregnancies, delivery and postpartum experiences.

When you create an environment like this for another person it can help them feel less vulnerable, safe and understood. It helps to break down any walls they've built, release the tension in their minds and body which allows them the room to grow.
